What has a body and a tail and used as a pointing device for computers? A computer mouse it is. The computer mouse was invented by
Douglas Engelbart, a researcher at the Stanford Research Institute in 1963. Initially it had a name of 'bug" but the team later coined the term "mouse." Since then, the mouse has proven its effectivity in many instances where individuals use the computer for their work.
But with an invention on the way, the mouse me be considered an obsolete tool in man's history. G-speak, a company established by John Underkoffler, i said to study the use of hand gestures as a pointing mechanism for computers. First seen in the Tom Cruise movie
"The Minority Report", these hand gestures can take the place of a mouse. In the film, Tom Cruise was able to control a 3-dimensional computer environment using hand gestures. The company is said to have been inspired by the idea and hopes to make a prototype of such. Although, it is indeed a brilliant idea, I could not help but be bothered by the fact that people have been way accustomed with using the mouse, that a technology to replace it is at best wishful thinking.
